Junior Cert

In 1989 the Junior Certificate programme was introduced to provide a coherent single unified programme for all 12 to 15 year olds.

This programme was introduced as new thinking had emerged on better ways of learning and new active teaching methods.

In addition, the Junior Certificate is a single national programme for all young people providing equality of access to certification.

The end of junior cycle was to be marked by a single examination, which, with a wide variety of modes and techniques of assessment and flexibility of levels within each subject, was intended meet the needs of all students.

Junior certificate students take between nine and ten subjects.
